Before you draw
Auto-detect first, draw manually if needed
Detect automatically
On the Game and subtitles page, in the Dialogue area card. Start the game, open a scene with dialogue, and Kaption finds the dialogue box by itself. The setup window does the same in its Game step.
Adjust the frame
Draw it by hand when auto-detect picks the wrong place, your UI scale is unusual, or you want it exact.
Drawing by hand also opens from in-game with Ctrl + Shift + R. You can change the shortcut on the Shortcuts page.
Manual setup
Draw it like this
-
Open a dialogue with a long NPC line
Quest NPCs, Paimon monologues, and cutscene chatter are useful. Shopkeepers and one-liners are too small and make you draw a box that cuts off later dialogue.
-
Press Ctrl + Shift + R
The screen dims and a crosshair appears. Drag around the speaker's name and the whole line of dialogue, without the portrait or the button hint. Adjust the frame on the Game and subtitles page does the same.
-
Leave room under the last line
Add roughly 20-40 pixels below the text. That is where a fourth line lands when the game wraps a sentence late.
-
Release the mouse and test one more line
Kaption remembers the frame for each game. Redo it only after a resolution change, UI-scale change, monitor change, or a game patch that moves the dialogue box, and try Detect automatically first.
What to include
Good frame
- The speaker's name and the full width of the dialogue text
- Enough height for a 3-line sample
- Small vertical buffer, especially at the bottom
- One monitor only
Bad frame
- Built around a one-liner
- Includes the speaker portrait
- Catches "Press SPACE" or other blinking UI hints
- Overlaps your translated subtitle overlay
Quick check
- 3+ dialogue lines fit inside the box.
- 20-40 px of bottom padding is visible.
- Translated subtitles do not touch the box.
Most glitches are overlay overlap
If subtitles flicker, repeat, or turn into nonsense, check this before changing anything else.
How to fix it
- Press Ctrl + Shift + D or click Show the frame on the Game and subtitles page. Green is fine; red means the overlay is inside it.
- Redraw with Ctrl + Shift + R or Adjust the frame. Cover the speaker's name and the dialogue text, nothing else.
- If the overlay keeps landing inside, drag the subtitles away with the mouse, or open Subtitle style and lower Max Height or move the Vertical slider so the translated text sits farther away.
Kaption warns while you drag: the selection box turns red before you release the mouse. Use Reselect region from the warning dialog if it appears.
When translations still look wrong
The last line of a long dialogue is missing
The frame is too short. Redraw it against a longer NPC line and add another 20 pixels below the text.
Translations flicker or keep repeating
The frame is catching something that changes every frame, like a continue prompt, particles, or the translated overlay. Tighten it around the dialogue text.
Kaption picked the wrong spot
Start the game, open a scene with dialogue and click Detect automatically on the Game and subtitles page. If it still misses, click Adjust the frame and draw it yourself.
